ครั้งนี้มารู้จักการใช้ used to ในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษกัน ซึ่งโดยปกติแล้ว used to ถ้าแปลเป็นภาษาไทยก็จะแปลว่า เคย โดยบางครั้งอาจจะเป็น เคยใช้ เคยเป็น เคยทำ เคยอยู่ แบบนี้เป็นต้น ซึ่งคำว่า used to เป็นการกระทำที่เคยเกิดขึ้นเป็นปกติในสมัยอดีตแต่ก็เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นยาวนาน เพื่อให้เข้าใจมากขึ้นมาลองดูประโยคตัวอย่างของ used to ว่าใช้อย่างไร

ตัวอย่าง

• He used to drive to school but now he takes the train.
• She used to smoke a cigarette a day but she stopped three years ago.

โดย เรายังสามารถใช้ Used to กับเหตุการณ์ที่เคยเกิดขึ้นจริงแต่เกิดขึ้นไม่นานมาก เช่น

• I didn’t use to like him but now I do.
• Pony used to have really long hair but she’s had it all cut off.

หรือเรายังสามารถ ใช้ used to เพื่อพูดถึงบางสิ่งบางอย่างที่เป็นปกติ เช่น

• They’ve always lived in cold countries so they aren’t used to the hot weather here.
• David has lived in England for over a year so he is used to driving on the left now.

นอกจากนี้  เรายังใช้ to get used to doing เพื่อพูดถึงขั้นตอนของบางสิ่งบางอย่าง ที่กลายเป็นเรื่องปกติสำหรับเรา เช่น

• She has always lived in the city but now she’s beginning to get used to living in the country.
• I didn’t understand the accent when I first moved here but quickly got used to
