ทั้ง Start และ Begin 2 คำนี้มีความหมายในทิศทางเดียวกัน ที่แปลว่าเริ่ม หรือเริ่มต้นบางสิ่งบางอย่าง  ถึงขั้นสามารถใช้ทดแทนกันได้ โดยหลักการใช้งานที่น่าจดจำมีดังนี้

เราจะใช้ Start และ Begin กับกิจกรรมที่เป็น event  ได้

ตัวอย่าง

• I started college in 2013 = I began collage in 2013
• We start work at 9:00 am = We begin work at 9:00 am

สามารถใช้ Start และ Begin แล้วตามด้วย Gerund (V.ing)

ตัวอย่าง

• I started studying it in 2013 = I began studying it in 2013
• He will start working in May = He will begin working in May

แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม เราสามารถใช้ Start + machine / equipment ได้เท่านั้น แต่ Begin ไม่สามารถ เช่น

• I started the car.
• I started the dishwasher.
