เรื่อง Can และ Could เป็นกริยาช่วย หรือ Modal Verb ที่น่าสนใจเนื่องจากบางคนอาจจะยังไม่รู้ถึงความแตกต่างของทั้ง 2 คำนี้ ดังนั้นเรามาดูกันว่า Can ใช้ตอนไหนได้บ้าง แล้ว Could ใช้เมื่อใดบ้าง ดังนี้

หลักการใช้ Can

• เราใช้ Can เพื่อแสดงความสามารถว่าทำได้ เช่น Birds can fly.
• ใช้ Can เมื่อต้องการบางสิ่งแบบไม่เป็นทางการ เช่น Can you help me lift this box?
• ใช้ Can สำหรับขออนุญาตแบบไม่เป็นทางการ เช่น Can I sit in that chair please?
• ใช้ Can เมื่อรู้ว่าสิ่งนั้นเป็นไปได้ เช่น I know you can win the competition.
• ใช้ Can เพื่อเสนอ (Offer)เช่น Can I carry your bags for you?

หลักการใช้ Could

• เราใช้ Could เพื่อแสดงความสามารถในอดีตที่ผ่านมา เช่น I could ride a horse when I was younger but now I can’t.
• ใช้ Could เมื่อต้องการบางสิ่งอย่างสุภาพ เป็นทางการ เช่น Could you please use your bathroom?
• ใช้ Could แสดงถึงความเป็นไปได้ในอดีต เช่น Why did you do that? You could have broken your leg.
• ใช้ Could เพื่อแนะนำ (Suggestion) เช่น We could go to the movies if you are interested.
